Skipping Stones · Level 2 · Board 1

The first two-sailor exchange

Trade one stone between the two banks, then send each sailor away on a different pad.

Two long horizontal banks, a red-sailed boat below the left edge and a pink stone on the lower bank. Two lily pads wait at the banks’ left ends.

Two-sailor notation

A = the original sailor from Level 1. B = the companion introduced in Level 2. Left, right, up and down refer to the pictured board.

Hint 1What to notice

A sailor on the opposite shore can stop a throw. Think of the second character as a movable end point.

Hint 2What to set up

Send the stone up first, then across the upper bank. You need the lower sailor to receive it again in a different column.

Hint 3The decisive move

The final stone goes between the two pads. Prepare both sailors before that throw, because the pads leave on separate currents.

  1. Name your sailors

A is the sailor who came from Level 1; B is the new companion. Keep A on the lower bank for the opening exchange.

  2. Relay the stone

A throws the pink stone up. B sends it left across the upper bank, then down to A. Move B four tiles left. A sends the stone left across the lower bank and then up to B.

  3. Move the receiving column

B pushes the stone right, then down to A in that new column. B now steps onto the pad beside the upper bank.

  4. Release both rides

A moves the stone eight tiles right, two up and then left between the pads. They move into their separate currents. A boards the pad by the lower bank while B rides the other one.

Check your result

Both sailors have a ride out. If B is still standing on the jetty when its pad leaves, undo the last throw and board first.

If your attempt went wrong

If the stone disappears into water instead of reaching the other sailor, undo that throw and check the receiving column. Keep the catcher in place until the stone arrives.
